Balasan Pottery

Although famous for its Lechon Festival and delicious mud crabs, the town of Balasan in Northern Iloilo has a pottery craft that has been in place for several decades now.

Located in Brgy.___________________, the potters are employing the manual method in molding the clay into different forms. Using a piece of would as pagpag  and a rotary wheel made of wood, the clay is tightened slowly into form. It is said that the continuous and gentle application of force on the clay using the pagpag will make the clay more adhesive and the molded object stronger.

They are producing small pottery products like water jars, flower pots and colon. While there is a bit of concern on the aging potters who are using the manual method, the local government of Balasan is doing everything they could in order to support the potters. The finished clay products are being used as giveaways to tourists and visitors.

Interested tourists who want to see the actual process can actually coordinate with the local tourism office who are more than willing to accommodate them and facilitate with the potters for a visit and a demonstration of how it is done
